WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

Domestic and family violence is a crime.

Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behaviour through which a person seeks to control and dominate another person. It can happen at home or outside the home. It causes fear and harm to the body, mind and spirit, and rarely is a single incident - but pervasive behaviour that gradually undermines the victim’s confidence and ability to leave the violent person. The severity and frequency of violence often escalate over time.

Toxic Relationships

No relationship is perfect, but for the most part, a good relationship makes you feel secure, happy, cared for, respected, and supported to be authentically yourself.
On the other side of that coin are toxic relationships. These are the relationships that make you feel drained, depleted, and even distraught.
It’s more than just a “rough patch”—it’s a recurring, long-term pattern of bad behaviour, and incredibly damaging and volatile.

Why doesn't she 'just leave?' - the Cycle of Abuse

Abuse comes in many forms such as physical, verbal, emotional and sexual. People being abused by their partners are not constantly being abused and the abuse is never inflicted at totally random times. The cycle of abuse is defined by the ways in which an abusive partner keeps a target in a relationship, spanning subtle behaviors as well as physical, visible violence. This pattern is commonly referred to as the CYCLE OF ABUSE.
She doesn't 'just leave' - because her partner has conditioned her to believe that it isn't an option.
